Happy Cinco De Mayo!! This year one of my best friend's Rebecca and I are holding the 8th annual Little Miss Mt. Pleasant Pageant that happens to be on this festive day.

This is a photo of our adorable Royalty from last year.
When I was Miss Mt. Pleasant EIGHT years ago (Crazy!!) Rebecca and I started this little miss pageant. We decided that we wanted to teach the young girls of Mt. Pleasant that when a young lady wins Miss Mt. Pleasant that she does more that just ride on a float and look beautiful. We wanted to teach them that her job is really about service. We have our current Miss Mt. Pleasant help them learn this aspect of the pageant as she develops a service project for all of the young ladies to participate in.

This is a picture of the girls from a few years ago. They helped make Mt. Pleasant beautiful by planting flowers in this pot and the Relic Home (a museum in Mt. Pleasant).
The Pageant itself consists of three areas of competition TALENT, ON-STAGE QUESTION, and SUNDAY DRESS.
First the girls perform their talent. This area of competition is worth 45% of their overall score. The girls are judges on their character, originality of talent and presentation....NOT on what they wear. This pageant is not like the little beauty pageants that you see on TV. We want the girls to wear what they already have and therefore they are not judges on this in any aspect of the pageant. This is meant to be a learning experience for the girls and we don't want parents to feel they need to purchase fancy dresses for their daughters to wear in this competition.
Then the girls are asked two on-stage questions. I think that this is kind of scary for young girls to do but it helps give them experience. It's so much fun we have them fill out a fact sheet a head of time to answer questions about themselves like What is your favorite color/animal/subject in school/etc. From this fact sheet we determine a unique fact about the girls and ask them that piece of information at the pageant as part of their on-stage question. They are also asked what they love most about Mt. Pleasant. Those girls come up with some of the best answers! This area of competition is worth 40% of the girls total score and they are judges on Character, originality of her answer and her oral language skills...NOT her attire.
The last area of competition is the modeling of the Sunday dress. As I mentioned before we encourage parents to NOT purchase any clothing for their daughters because they are not judged on their clothing. The girls always do such a great job on this part of the pageant. It's really cute to see them model their favorite Sunday dress. This area is worth 25% of their total score and they are judged on character and the way the girls present themselves on stage (confidence).
We really want this to be a positive experience for the young ladies. At the end of the pageant we announce our Royalty. We consider all of the young girls winners and our Royalty for having the courage to get up on-stage and participate in this competition. Each girl in the competition gets recognized at the end as being part of the royalty and receives a sash that says (LITTLE MISS MT. PLEASANT ROYALTY) a flower and a crown. The royalty is named in random order until the top three then we announce the LITTLE 1ST ATTENDANT, LITTLE 2ND ATTENDANT and the new LITTLE MISS MT. PLEASANT. The top three little girls then get to ride behind the older girls float for the 4th of July parade in Mt. Pleasant. We also ask the top three to help participate in various activities throughout the year if they are available as well as help crown the new Miss Mt. Pleasant every spring.
And there you have our little miss pageant in a nutshell. You really need to come and watch this pageant. It is a fun event and the little girls are so adorable! I look forward to this pageant more than any other pageant. This year we have 14 little girls that want to compete to become the next Little Miss Mt. Pleasant. They are so adorable and I will post pictures of our winners in the near future.
